How do I grade non-auto-marked questions?

If you create and deploy a test containing Essay, Short Answer or File Response question types, you will be required to grade these manually before students can see their scores and feedback for the test.

Step 1: Either:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Grade Centre > Full Grade Centre.
  2. Locate the Grade Centre column for the test, and click the chevron in the cell containing the attempt which displays the ‘needs grading’ icon.
  3. Select View Grade Details from the contextual menu.
  4. On the Grade Details page, click View Attempts.

Or:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Grade Centre > Needs Grading.
  2. On the Needs Grading page, search for or locate both the name of the test and the name of a student to grade.
  3. Click on the student’s name.

Step 2: On the Grade Test page, you can read the student’s given answer to any Essay, Short Answer or File Response questions. Type a score in the box against the points possible for that question, and use the Response Feedback option to give feedback to each individual given answer and/or the Feedback to User box (at the bottom of the Grade Test page) to provide feedback to the overall attempt. (use the content editor functions if you wish to format the text or include files or multimedia in the feedback). If you associated a rubric with any Essay, Short Answer or File Response question, click View Rubric if you wish to use the rubric to provide feedback to the student.

Step 3: Click Submit. The student’s score will replace the ‘in progress’ icon in the Grade Centre cell, and any calculated totals with automatically update. The student will also see any feedback that you have chosen to make available at this time.
